I am primarily an abstract painter, a web designer, a graphic designer, and an illustrator. Several years ago, I began a course of study in interior design at ACC’s Interior Design Institute, and found that I have kind of a knack for beautifying interiors and a passion for good design in interior spaces. I now do this mostly for myself, but also occasionally for friends, relatives, neighbors, and anyone else who may not require the services of a full-fledged designer at full-fledged designer prices.
My interest in the design of interior spaces goes back to my childhood; my sister would tell you that growing up sharing a bedroom with me meant everything on the dresser had to be arranged ‘just so,’ and how my side of the closet was always organized by color (hey, isn’t everybody’s?).
As a teenager, I spent some hot summers in my air-conditioned room learning how to design and draw homes and interiors, and started considering a career in interior design or architecture…but by the time I arrived at college, my interests led me in other directions.
My attraction for interior design was renewed in 2002 with the purchase of our lovely and charming 1937-era home that was in need of more than a little paint and polish. I took my first interior design class primarily to learn a few things about redesigning our space. As friends visited our home during the redesign process, they marveled at the transformations, particularly my use of color in our space. Based on what I have done at our home, a few friends (and strangers) have hired me to help with their own color and design dilemmas.
Through years of experience in art and design, I have a deep understanding of how to use color to move the eye through a space, whether it’s the space in a painting or an interior space. I am able to apply the skills learned as an artist and web/graphic designer to the decoration of beautiful interiors. I love the idea of applying these skills to helping others realize both beauty and functionality in their own spaces.
The work on our lovely old house continues in fits and starts as time and finances allow. I can at least imagine an end in site, when all the remodeling/renovation/painting and design projects are complete, and we can just enjoy the beauty of our space. In the meantime, I’ll be posting some notes about things I learn through our renovation process, along with pictures — the trials and tribulations — and hopefully, positive outcomes!
